An avalanche has struck a group of five skiers in Italy’s northern Piedmont region, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives.
The incident occurred on the eastern face of Punta Valgrande, a summit on the border between Italy and Switzerland, at approximately midday on Sunday.
What Happened
According to rescuers on the mountain, two of the skiers survived and were airlifted to a hospital for treatment, while the other three were dragged downhill for several hundred meters, suffering fatal injuries.
Witnesses described the avalanche as violent, sweeping people off the slope.
High Avalanche Risk
The area where the avalanche occurred has been classified as having a third-degree avalanche risk level, indicating a high risk of winter avalanches.
Authorities had issued an alert warning of “considerable danger of avalanches” above 6,900 feet (2,100 meters). Mountain rescuers reported challenging weather conditions, which may have contributed to the tragedy.
Urgent Warning
As the ski season continues, authorities are urging caution and advising skiers to avoid hazardous areas in the mountains.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of avalanches and the importance of heeding warnings and taking necessary precautions.
Recent Avalanche Incidents
This incident is not an isolated one, as last month, a devastating avalanche at a popular ski resort in Turkey killed a rising judo star, Emre Yazgan, despite efforts to save him.
The ski season at Palandöken Ski Resort in Erzurum, known for its ideal winter sports conditions, had begun just two weeks prior to the tragedy.
Stay Safe on the Slopes
As the winter sports season continues, it’s essential to prioritize safety and be aware of the risks associated with avalanches.
Skiers and snowboarders are advised to check the avalanche risk level before heading out and to follow all safety guidelines and warnings issued by local authorities.
