A massive emergency response is underway on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula after a sudden landslide sent a house tumbling down a hill, leaving one person hospitalized.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 8:45 am on Penny Lane at McCrae, with emergency services rushing to the scene.
What Happened?
A multi-agency response team, led by Victoria SES, with Fire Rescue Victoria and Ambulance Victoria, was quickly deployed to the area.
The landslide was so powerful that it propelled a house down a hill, causing significant damage and destruction.
One person was taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition, and fortunately, no one else is believed to be trapped.
Eyewitness Accounts
Local resident Tanina Osborne was in the area for her morning swim when she heard the landslide unfold.
“We heard this almighty tumble like a truckload of rock had just been dumped on the ground, but it turns out it was a house,” she said in a video from the scene.
Another eyewitness, Kim, described the scene to 3AW’s Heidi Murphy, saying, “The house has completely fallen down the hilltop, it’s behind other units that are out the front and this house is completely crushed now.”
The Aftermath
The roof of the house has dislodged, and the property has been significantly damaged.
Emergency responders are working to stabilize the terrain and make the scene safe.
At this stage, it’s believed that only one property has been significantly impacted.
However, residents have been warned to stay away from the area as the slope may continue to move for hours or even days.
Road Closures and Warnings
Point Nepean Road has been closed in both directions between Latrobe Parade and Coburn Avenue.
The State Emergency Service has issued a warning, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid the area until further notice. The cause of the landslide is still unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
