A devastating incident occurred on the Princes Hwy at Waterfall, in Sydney’s south, on Tuesday morning. A female cyclist in her 70s was fatally struck by a car around 8am, leaving the community in shock.
What Happened
The accident happened just past the train station, and emergency services rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics, the cyclist died at the scene. The southbound lanes of the highway were closed to allow investigators to gather evidence, but have since reopened.
Investigation Underway
The rider has not been formally identified, and investigations are ongoing.
A report will be prepared for the coroner, and police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The 23-year-old woman who was driving the car has been taken to Sutherland Hospital for mandatory testing.
Traffic Update
The incident caused significant disruptions to traffic in the area, with light vehicles diverted into McKell Ave and heavy vehicles forced to wait.
Although diversions have now been lifted, traffic remains heavy, and Transport NSW is advising motorists to allow extra travel time while conditions return to normal.
