A violent incident unfolded in Melbourne on Sunday night, leaving a 39-year-old man with severe head injuries.
According to police, the victim was attacked with a machete by a 15-year-old boy and another individual in St Kilda.
The Incident Unfolds
The victim, a St Albans resident, was walking along Barkly Street near Carlisle Street when he was approached by two people.
They allegedly demanded that he hand over his car keys and tried to grab his mobile phone. In a shocking turn of events, one of the attackers struck the victim across the head with a machete, resulting in a substantial slash wound.
Senior Sergeant Christy Walsh described the injury as a “penetrating trauma,” highlighting the severity of the attack.
Fortunately, there were many witnesses in the area who came to the victim’s aid, providing first aid until paramedics arrived.
A Random and Brazen Attack
The incident has left police concerned, as it appears to be a random attack. The victim did not know his attackers, and the fact that a machete was used in such a brazen manner is alarming.
Senior Sergeant Walsh emphasized that the attack was not only violent but also “concerning” due to the willingness of the attackers to use such a dangerous weapon in a public place.
Investigation and Arrest
The two alleged offenders fled the scene without taking anything, but police were quick to respond.
On Monday, a 15-year-old boy was arrested at Southern Cross Railway Station and charged with armed robbery, intentionally causing serious injury, assault with a weapon, and possessing a controlled weapon.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear in a children’s court.
Reviewing Evidence
Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area, as well as mobile phone footage provided by witnesses.
This footage will be crucial in piecing together the events surrounding the attack and identifying the second suspect. As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
