A shocking incident at the Moruya races on Friday afternoon has left two jockeys, Blake Spriggs and Beany Panya, in a critical condition.
The accident occurred when Spriggs’ horse, Blesstas, clipped the heels of the leader and crashed to the turf, causing Panya’s horse, The Boomerang, to also fall.
The Aftermath of the Accident
Both jockeys were airlifted to hospital and admitted to the ICU at Canberra Hospital. Spriggs, 32, suffered significant chest and abdominal injuries, including fractures to his ribs and clavicle, and will require surgery.
Panya, 31, suffered two fractures in her spine and will undergo surgery.
A Glimmer of Hope
There is some positive news, however, as Spriggs’ brother, Dustin, announced on Saturday that Blake had come out of an induced coma and was responsive.
“He knows who all his loved ones are and is fighting hard,” Dustin tweeted.
Panya also showed signs of improvement, waking up late on Friday night and recognising her partner and fellow jockey, Robyn Freeman.
The Road to Recovery
Racing NSW released an update on Saturday, stating that Spriggs continues to be intubated and sedated, while Panya is still drowsy but able to move her limbs.
Neurosurgeons are assessing whether she requires surgical fixation of her spine.
The Moruya Race Club staff, rescue chopper staff, and Canberra Hospital have all been praised for their efforts in helping the injured jockeys.
A Community Comes Together
The incident has sent shockwaves through the racing community, with many offering their support to the injured jockeys.
As the two jockeys continue to fight for their lives, the racing community is coming together to offer their well wishes and support. We will continue to provide updates on their condition as more information becomes available.
