If you’ve recently traveled through Sydney Airport, you need to be aware of a measles alert that’s been issued.
A traveler who flew in from Honolulu on January 17 has been diagnosed with measles, and health authorities are warning others who may have been exposed.
The Infected Flight: What Happened
The infected traveler arrived at Sydney Airport on Jetstar flight JQ4 at 4:29 pm on January 17.
They then spent time in the international terminal before boarding a domestic flight to the Gold Coast at 9:03 pm. If you were on this flight or in the terminal during this time, you may have been exposed to measles.
Symptoms to Watch Out For
Measles symptoms can take up to 18 days to appear, so it’s essential to be vigilant. Keep an eye out for:
- Fever
- Runny nose
- Sore eyes
- Cough
- A red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body
If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor before visiting.
No Ongoing Risk, But Precautions Are Necessary
According to health authorities, the airport poses no ongoing risk for measles. However, it’s crucial to take precautions, especially if you’re traveling overseas. Measles outbreaks are occurring in several regions worldwide, and being vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself.
Get Vaccinated: The Best Protection Against Measles
If you were born after 1965, ensure you’ve had two doses of the measles vaccine. This is particularly important before traveling overseas. The measles vaccine can prevent the disease even after exposure, if given early enough.
What to Do If You’ve Been Exposed
If you’ve been exposed to measles, watch out for symptoms until February 4. If you experience any symptoms, call your doctor before visiting. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Stay safe, and stay informed. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider.
