The US Department of State has just introduced a new “one flag policy” that’s got everyone talking.
From now on, only the American flag will be allowed to fly at US embassies and facilities around the world.
This move is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to limit diversity initiatives in government institutions.
What’s Behind the New Policy?
The decision seems to be a response to the flying of gay pride and Black Lives Matter flags at some US embassies during the Biden administration.
You might remember that gay pride flags were even flown at the White House during a Pride month celebration in 2023, which sparked a backlash from conservative groups.
The Memo: Only Two Exceptions Allowed
A cable obtained by the Guardian outlines the new policy, stating that “only the United States of America flag is authorized to be flown or displayed at US facilities, both domestic and abroad.”
The memo goes on to say that the American flag represents the values of justice, liberty, and democracy that unite all Americans.
The only exceptions to this rule are the prisoner of war/missing in action flag and the hostages and wrongful detainees flag.
The Bigger Picture: Trump’s Diversity Crackdown
This new policy is just the latest in a series of moves by the Trump administration to limit diversity and inclusion efforts in government.
Earlier this year, Trump signed executive orders calling for federal agencies to halt all DEI programs and establishing a controversial definition of sex that excludes non-binary individuals.
It’s clear that the Trump administration is taking a hard stance on diversity, but what do you think about this new policy?
