A devastating shooting at an adult education center in Sweden has left 10 people dead, with the perpetrator believed to be among the victims.
The attack, which occurred at the Risbergska school in Orebro, 200km west of Stockholm, has sent shockwaves throughout the country.
A Painful Day for Sweden
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident as a “very painful day for the whole of Sweden,” with his thoughts going out to those who were forced to endure a nightmare of fear and lockdown.
The shooting has raised concerns about the safety of schools and the growing problem of gang-related violence in the country.
The Attack Unfolds
According to eyewitnesses, the gunman opened fire at the school just after lunch, prompting a frantic evacuation of students and teachers.
Maria Pegado, a 54-year-old teacher, recounted the terrifying ordeal, saying someone burst into her classroom and shouted for everyone to get out.
She managed to escape with her 15 students, but not before hearing two shots being fired.
Investigation Underway
The local police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, confirmed that the perpetrator is believed to have acted alone, and while terrorism is not currently suspected as a motive, the investigation is ongoing.
The police are working to complete searches of the school and conduct witness interviews to piece together the events surrounding the attack.
A Rare but Deadly Incident
Sweden has been grappling with a surge in gang-related violence, but fatal attacks on schools are rare.
