A shocking incident unfolded in Darwin’s northern suburbs on Monday night, leaving a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The victim was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he is currently being treated for his injuries.
What Happened?
According to NT police, the shooting occurred at the Litchfield Court public housing complex in Coconut Grove, just after 7pm.
Paramedics quickly responded to the scene and transported the victim to the hospital. Fortunately, his condition has been deemed stable, and his injuries are considered minor.
Arrests Made
In a swift response, police arrested three individuals in connection with the incident.
A 19-year-old man, a 22-year-old man, and a 22-year-old woman were taken into custody in Katherine, over 300 kilometers south-east of Darwin, around 4am on Tuesday.
Investigation Underway
Assistant Commissioner Travis Wurst revealed that the weapon used in the shooting has not yet been found.
“We’re yet to determine exactly what that looks like… there is the possibility that the weapon is actually a homemade-type device,” he said.
Police have executed a search warrant in Palmerston and are working to locate the firearm.
No Links to Organized Crime
Wurst also confirmed that there is no evidence to suggest the incident is linked to organized crime or gang-related activity. “We believe all parties in the incident were known to each other,” he added.
Eyewitnesses Urged to Come Forward
Territory Duty Superintendent Tanya Mace assured the public that the attack was targeted and did not pose a risk to anyone in the surrounding area.
