Liz Hayes, a household name in Australian television, has announced that she’s leaving Nine after an incredible 44-year career.
The veteran journalist, known for her work on 60 Minutes and Today, is moving on to new opportunities.
A Legendary Career
Hayes’ journey with Nine began in 1981, and she quickly made a name for herself as a talented and dedicated reporter.
She became a co-host of Today in 1986, and later moved to 60 Minutes in 1996, where she covered some of the biggest stories of our time.
From US presidential elections to natural disasters, Hayes has interviewed world leaders, celebrities, and everyday people, sharing their stories with the world.
What’s Behind Her Departure?
So, why is Hayes leaving Nine after so many years? Insiders say she was involved in a long-running “standoff” with the executive producer of 60 Minutes, Kirsty Thomson, over the show’s production standards and direction.
Hayes reportedly felt that the program’s new breed of producers lacked experience, and that the content had become too light.
The dispute ultimately led to the cancellation of her spin-off program, Under Investigation with Liz Hayes.
A Lasting Legacy
Hayes’ departure marks the end of an era, but her legacy will live on. She’s won numerous awards, including a Logie Award and the Media Diversity Australia Award.
Nine’s director of television, Michael Healy, praised Hayes as “an Australian television legend” who has had a profound impact on the industry.
“Her many accomplishments speak volumes about the type of journalist she is – tenacious, a truth seeker, and above all, a storyteller,” he said.
What’s Next for Liz Hayes?
While Hayes is leaving Nine, she’s not saying goodbye to journalism just yet. She’s promised to continue telling stories, and Nine has hinted that we can expect to see her on our screens again soon.
As Hayes herself said, “What hasn’t changed is the need for good stories to be told, and I will continue to tell them.” We can’t wait to see what’s next for this Australian television icon.
