The investigation into the death of MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo has been finalized, but the cause of his passing may never be publicly known.
A 16-month investigation by the Victorian Coroners Court has concluded, and the coroner has decided not to release the findings.
A Devastating Loss
Zonfrillo’s body was found in a hotel room in Carlton, Melbourne, on April 30, 2023, at the age of 46.
His family, including his wife Lauren Fried and their children, were left shattered by the news.
“With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday,” his family said in a statement.
The Investigation
The TV personality’s body was discovered at Zagame’s House after police conducted a welfare check. His wife, Lauren, had contacted Victoria Police after he failed to respond to her calls.
The investigation into his death was not treated as suspicious, and the coroner’s finding will not be published.
According to the Victorian Coroners Court, a coroner can decide not to publish a finding if they reasonably consider that non-publication is in the public interest.
A Life of Culinary Success and Personal Struggles
Zonfrillo left behind a legacy of culinary success, including his role as a judge on MasterChef Australia. He had been undergoing treatment for bowel cancer, which was diagnosed in 2021.
His wife, Lauren, has since opened up about processing her grief and has written a memoir, Till Death Do Us Part, which will be published on May 6.
A Bright and Optimistic Future
Lauren has spoken about the challenges of moving forward after her husband’s death, saying, “It’s been really hard for me to explain how we got from absolute catastrophe to the new version of our life, which, despite it all, is quite bright and optimistic.”
The cover of her memoir shows a passionate kiss with Zonfrillo, and the book promises to be a candid and heartfelt account of her journey through grief.
