The surfing community is in shock after the tragic deaths of two beloved Australian surfers, Mitch Baker and Neil Luke, within a week of each other.
A Devastating Loss for the Surfing Community
Mitch Baker, a 32-year-old former Victorian state champion, passed away suddenly, leaving behind his partner Ashley, parents Zena and Craig, and brother Callum.
The news has sent shockwaves throughout the Australian surfing community, with tributes pouring in from fellow surfers and friends.
Three-time world champion Mick Fanning and pro surfer Jack Freestone were among those who paid their respects to Baker, remembering him as a kind and gentle soul who took pride in giving back to his local community.
"One of the guys I got so nervous drawing in a heat when I was younger. Such a great surfer and such a nice dude on land," Freestone posted.
Remembering Neil Luke: A Surfing Legend
Neil Luke, another talented surfer, lost his battle with cancer on February 4. Luke was a well-respected coach and mentor in the surfing community, known for his positive attitude and humor.
He was a gifted young surfer who was regularly selected in representative teams and was passionate about creating boards for others through his business, Neil Luke Kneeboards.
Phillip Island Boardriders Club president Jake Eisen, a close friend of both Baker and Luke, said the whole community was shattered by their loss.
"He was the most gifted athlete when he was a kid... Just a gifted, gentle, kind person. He always had a chat, always gave back to his community, and you just couldn't get much better," Eisen said of Baker.
Tributes and Memorial Services
Baker's heartbroken partner Ashley has released a tribute, saying, "Family and friends, please join us for the send-off for our boy Mitchy... Mitch was such a big, kind-hearted soul, and we are going to send him off in the way he deserves."
A funeral service for Mitch Baker will be held at the Phillip Island Boardriders Club on February 12.
A memorial service for Neil Luke will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Bentleigh East, Victoria on February 14.
A surfers' paddle-out and barbecue are also being planned on Phillip Island to honor Luke's memory.
Support and Condolences
The Victorian Surfing organization has paid tribute to both surfers, saying, "Tragically, last week we lost two of Victorian Surfing's finest...
Both Mitch Baker and Neil Luke were valued parts of the Victorian surfing community, winning state titles throughout the years and contributing to the community in many other ways."
