Imagine being left to fend for yourself with no basic necessities like soap or toilet paper. This was the harsh reality for three kids, who were found living in a home filled with mould, human waste, and trash piles as high as 4 feet.
The children, aged 12, 13, and 15, were discovered during a welfare check after their landlord reported not having heard from their mom since December.
The authorities were met with a scene of absolute squalor, with garbage and human waste everywhere, and the toilet overflowing with feces.
A Life of Neglect and Isolation
The kids had been living on their own since 2020 or 2021, surviving on food dropped off by their mom or strangers.
They had no access to basic hygiene products, and as a result, were found wearing soiled clothing, with matted hair and long toenails that made it difficult for them to walk.
The girls had apparently not been outside in years, and all three children seemed unfamiliar with basic hygiene practices, including using a toilet.
The children’s daily routine consisted of watching TV and playing games, with no education or social interaction. Their sleeping arrangements were equally shocking, with the boy sleeping on a mattress on the floor and the girls sleeping on pizza boxes.
A Hazmat Situation
The conditions inside the home were so bad that an evidence technician had to wear a hazmat suit to process the scene.
The authorities were shocked by the extent of the neglect, with Sheriff Michael Bouchard describing it as “abuse of the highest order.”
Justice Will Be Served
The 34-year-old mom, who shares the same name as one of her children, was arrested and will face the consequences of her actions.
The children have been taken to the hospital for evaluation and are now in the custody of a relative.
The community has rallied around the children, with the sheriff’s office initially asking for clothing donations but now focusing on education supplies and funds for their future wellbeing.
The case has sparked outrage and concern for the welfare of children, highlighting the importance of vigilance and support for those in need.
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: these children deserve justice and a chance to start anew.
We can only hope that they receive the care and support they need to recover from this traumatic experience.
