A new case of bird flu has been detected on a poultry farm in Euroa, Victoria, just days after the state thought it had eradicated the disease.
This is the third case of the H7N8 avian influenza in the region this month, and it’s got everyone on high alert.
What You Need to Know
The latest case was found within a “restricted area” near where the previous two outbreaks occurred. While it’s not a surprise, it’s still a concern for the community.
The good news is that the affected birds have been humanely destroyed, and work is underway to prevent the spread of the disease.
Is Your Food Safe?
If you’re wondering whether your eggs and poultry products are safe to eat, the answer is yes.
According to Dr. Cameron Bell, Victoria’s acting chief veterinary officer, supermarket eggs and poultry products are still safe for consumption.
However, buying limits remain in place in some Aussie supermarkets due to the ongoing egg shortage.
What’s Being Done to Control the Outbreak?
A control area has been set up in Strathbogie Shire, east of the Goulburn Valley Freeway, to prevent the spread of the virus.
If you live in Euroa, Violet Town, Longwood, Ruffy, Avenel, or Strathbogie, you need to follow specific rules, including housing requirements for properties with 50 or more birds.
You cannot move birds, products, or equipment into, out of, or within the area without a permit.
What You Can Do to Help
Dr. Bell is urging everyone to play their part in preventing the spread of the disease. If you have birds, make sure to follow the rules and regulations in place.
Remember, a strong biosecurity system relies on everyone’s cooperation.
