In a shocking and tragic incident, Julie Murphy, a 56-year-old former Queensland jockey, has passed away after being stung by a wasp in her garden.
The much-loved rider, who was known for her kindness and generosity, died just a few days after the incident.

Murphy was a well-known figure in Queensland, having ridden in New South Wales and country Victoria, and her sudden passing has left many in mourning.
A Career to Remember
Murphy retired from racing in 2013, with an impressive 69 wins under her belt. Her best season was in 2009-10, where she scored an impressive 10 victories.
She also had a long and successful partnership with Ipswich trainer Peter Moncrieff, with whom she combined for 104 races, three wins, and 18 minor placings.
Tributes Pour In
The racing community has come together to pay tribute to Murphy, with many remembering her as a kind and generous person. “She was a very good trackwork rider and just helpful as a person,” said Moncrieff.
“I always found her good to get along with, that is for sure. She was a good friend of my partner Pam.” Cairns trainer Peter Rowe also praised Murphy, saying “She was really nice and would come up here when we were short of riders.”

Murphy’s friends and colleagues have remembered her as a kind and genuine person, who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
“Such a wonderful person,” said Angie Chandler, a popular Ipswich racing figure. “I had the honour of working with Julie for many years, she will be sadly missed by many. Rest in peace my friend xx.”
Bonnie Thomson, a former Townsville jockey and close friend of Murphy’s, also paid tribute, saying “She was a kind woman and was always nice to everyone.”

Racing Queensland has extended its condolences to the Murphy family, while the Queensland Racing Industry Support Program is assisting Murphy’s family and friends during this difficult time.
