If you're living in Queensland, you need to stay alert as Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred is slowly making its way towards the coast.
The cyclone is currently hovering over the Coral Sea, bringing strong winds and wild surf with it.
What to Expect: Strong Winds and Wild Surf
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the southern Great Barrier Reef Islands and K'gari can expect strong to gale-force winds over the weekend.
The good news is that there's a "high confidence" that the cyclone will remain well offshore for the next two days, says Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jonathan How.
However, the cyclone is expected to move towards the coast today before shifting southeast tomorrow and Monday.
By Tuesday, it's predicted to slow down, and by the middle of next week, it may head back towards the southern Queensland coast.
Weather Warnings in Place
A severe weather warning is currently in place for parts of the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts. This means that residents in these areas should be prepared for strong winds and potential damage.
Areas at Risk
The Bureau has warned that there's a risk the system may approach close enough to the coast to produce gales and damaging wind gusts about the coastal fringe overnight tonight and during Sunday.
Locations that may be affected include:
- Bundaberg
- Gladstone
- Hervey Bay
- K'gari
- Miriam Vale
- Rainbow Beach
