Kmart is introducing a new system to tackle the growing problem of trolley theft, damage, and abandonment in their Queensland stores.
The retailer is rolling out coin-operated shopping carts in about 30% of their stores, where customers will need to insert a $1 or $2 coin to unlock a trolley.
The coin will be refunded once the trolley is returned to a designated bay.
How the New System Works
The move to coin-operated trolleys is aimed at reducing the financial burden of replacing and repairing trolleys, and improving the overall shopping experience.
It’s also in line with new regulations from local councils on trolley containment systems.
By introducing this system, Kmart hopes to minimize the number of abandoned trolleys in parking lots and public spaces, which can pose a safety risk to the public.
A Familiar Concept, But Still a Surprise for Some
The new system is similar to the one already in place at Aldi, where customers use coins or special tokens to unlock shopping trolleys.
However, some Kmart shoppers have been caught off guard by the change, with some expressing frustration on social media
. “Many people, including me, never carry change,” one customer said.
Others have questioned the need for the change, worrying that it will lead to job losses for trolley collectors.
Adapting to the New System
Despite the mixed reactions, there are simple ways for customers to adapt to the new system.
Some shoppers are recommending keeping a dedicated gold coin in the car or using tokens from other supermarkets that can fit on a key chain.
Others are suggesting “paying it forward” by passing the cart with the coin to the next person who finds themselves out of change.
As one shopper put it, “It just makes sure the carts are all put back in the right place.”
What You Need to Know
The rollout of coin-operated trolleys is not a nationwide change, but rather a case-by-case approach. Kmart will post signage at retail locations to notify customers before implementation.
The retailer is committed to minimizing the inconvenience to customers and is exploring ways to make the transition as smooth as possible.
With a little creativity and cooperation, Kmart shoppers can help make the new system a success and keep their community clean and tidy.
