The horse racing community is mourning the loss of Bernadette Payne, sister of legendary jockey Michelle Payne.
Bernadette, a talented jockey in her own right, has passed away at the age of 51, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and dedication to her family and the sport.
A Family of Champions
The Paynes are a household name in the world of horse racing, with Ballarat trainer Paddy Payne raising 10 children, many of whom have followed in his footsteps.
Michelle Payne, of course, is a superstar in her own right, having won the Melbourne Cup in 2015.
But Bernadette was also a skilled jockey, retiring in 2009 with an impressive 200 wins under her belt.
A Difficult Fight
According to a statement released by Racing Victoria on behalf of the family, Bernadette had been facing a tough battle in recent years.
"It is with deep sadness that we confirm that Bernadette has passed away," the statement read.
"She had a very difficult and challenging time in recent years and we find solace in the hope that she is now at peace."
The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, but it's clear that Bernadette will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A History of Tragedy
Sadly, the Payne family has faced more than its fair share of tragedy over the years. Paddy's wife Mary passed away in a car accident when Michelle was just six months old, leaving Paddy to raise their 10 children on his own.
And in 2007, Michelle's sister Brigid lost her life to a heart attack at the age of 36. Despite these challenges, the Payne family has always shown remarkable strength and resilience.
A Tribute to Bernadette
Michelle Payne spoke fondly of her sister Bernadette in an interview with Racing.com last year, remembering her selflessness and dedication to their family.
"Bernadette was 11 years old and getting up in the middle of the night to feed me," she said. "It was just incredible that they got through it and that they're so strong."
Bernadette's passing is a devastating loss, but her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched.
Funeral Details to Follow
Funeral details for Bernadette Payne are expected to be released shortly.
As the horse racing community comes together to mourn her passing, we remember a talented jockey, a loving sister, and a devoted member of the Payne family. Rest in peace, Bernadette.
