Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne has spoken out for the first time since the death of her sister, Bernadette, thanking fans and the racing industry for their support during this difficult time.
Bernadette, a former jockey herself, passed away last week at the age of 51, leaving behind a legacy of love, memories, and a family that's grateful for the outpouring of love.
A Family's Gratitude
"We're so deeply sad, but we feel grateful and appreciate all the love and support," Michelle told News Corp in an emotional interview.
The Payne family has been overwhelmed by the response from the racing community, with Michelle expressing her thanks to Racing Victoria and close friends for their support.
"We thank everyone for the love and understanding. We're very grateful for the support received for Bernadette and us during this very difficult time."
Celebrating Bernadette's Life
Michelle also paid a heartfelt tribute to her sister on social media, sharing a reel of photos and memories that showcase the special bond between the two.
"Words can't describe," she wrote, accompanied by a series of photos that celebrate Bernadette's life. "We pray you are resting peacefully and we remember all of the beautiful memories."
A Family United in Grief
The Payne family came together on Saturday to mourn the loss of Bernadette, with Michelle and her brother Patrick's horse, Smokin' Princess, competing in the Group 3 Matron Stakes at Flemington.
Although the horse finished fourth, the family's presence at the event was a testament to their strength and resilience in the face of tragedy.
A Legacy of Love and Racing
Michelle shot to fame in 2015 when she won the Melbourne Cup, and her sister Bernadette had also had a successful career as a jockey before retiring in 2009.
The sisters were among 10 children born to Ballarat trainer Paddy, and their lives were marked by both triumph and tragedy.
Michelle's mother passed away when she was just six months old, and she lost another sister, Brigid, in 2007.
A Sister's Love and Support
In a previous interview, Michelle spoke about the significant role Bernadette played in her life, particularly after their mother's passing.
"Bernadette was 11 years old and getting up in the middle of the night feeding me," Michelle said. "Amazing what they did and just without any fuss they just did what they had to do."
The sisters' bond was unbreakable, and Michelle's tribute to Bernadette is a testament to the love and support they shared throughout their lives.
