Tragedy has struck the music world with the passing of Rick Steele, a legendary blues musician and patriarch of the Steele family of musicians.
The 77-year-old artist died on March 10, surrounded by his loved ones.
A Legacy of Music
Rick Steele’s incredible career spanned over 60 years, with performances alongside iconic bands like Split Enz, Dragon, and the Little River Band.
He also supported his son Luke, of Empire of the Sun, on tour. His music touched the hearts of many, and his legacy will live on through his family.

A Family of Musicians
Rick’s children have all followed in his footsteps, with Luke being part of Empire of the Sun, Katy Steele singing for Little Birdy, and Jake being an electronic musician.
The oldest son, Jesse, was part of The Sleepy Jackson and now works as an environmental scientist in the US.
An Emotional Tribute
Luke Steele took to social media to pay tribute to his late father, sharing a heartfelt message and a compilation video of Rick throughout the years.
He described his father as “a true legend, a voice and a shepherd for the common man, a storyteller, a blues man with a heart of gold.” Luke remembered his dad as an eccentric, an artist with a beautiful flair, who loved his family, garden, and music.
A Warrior Spirit
Rick Steele’s final months were a testament to his strength and warrior spirit, as he fought a brave battle.
Luke expressed gratitude for the time they had with him as a family, calling it a “beautiful ending to a wonderful life.”
The WA Music Hall of Fame also paid tribute to Rick, remembering him as one of Australia’s finest live acts.
Leaving Behind a Legacy
Rick Steele is survived by his wife Liz, their four children, partners, and nine grandchildren. His music and legacy will continue to inspire and bless future generations.
