Rescue teams in Indonesia are racing against time to save a 27-year-old Brazilian woman who’s been stuck on a cliff on the country’s second-highest volcano for four days.
Juliana Marins was hiking with friends on Mount Rinjani when disaster struck, and now her fate hangs in the balance.
The Daring Rescue Effort
The rescue operation is proving to be a daunting task, with 50 people involved in the search.
Muhammad Hariyadi, the head of local rescuers, explained that the steep terrain and soft sand are making it extremely difficult to reach Marins.
A helicopter has been dispatched to the site to aid in the rescue, but the thick fog is adding an extra layer of complexity to the operation.
The Accident
Marins was walking with five friends on Saturday when she slipped and fell off a cliff on the side of the 3,726-metre mountain
. Luckily, she didn’t fall into the volcano crater, but the terrain is so treacherous that rescuers are struggling to reach her.
The soft sand is causing her to slip further down the cliff face, making the rescue even more challenging.
A Race Against Time
As of Tuesday morning, rescuers were still trying to get down the cliff to reach Marins. The situation is precarious, and the rescue team is doing everything they can to save her.
However, drone footage shows that Marins is not moving, and rescuers haven’t been able to confirm whether she’s still alive.
The Dangers of Hiking Mount Rinjani
This isn’t the first time a hiker has gotten into trouble on Mount Rinjani.
Several tourists, including foreigners, have died in accidents while hiking the volcano over the past few years. In fact, a Malaysian tourist fell off a cliff just last month.
The Forestry Minister, Raja Juli Antoni, has announced that the Mount Rinjani hiking track will be closed until further notice to facilitate the evacuation effort and out of respect for Marins and her family.
The Search Continues
The rescue team is working tirelessly to save Marins, and the world is holding its breath as it waits for news of her fate.
We can only hope that she’s found safe and sound, and that this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and caution when hiking in dangerous terrain.
