A small town in Victoria’s east has been hit by a 3.1 magnitude earthquake, leaving hundreds of residents shaken and wondering what just happened.
The tremors struck Woods Point, about 178km east of Melbourne, at around 5:20 am on Wednesday, catching many off guard.
What Happened?
The earthquake was detected by seismic activity monitors at a depth of 1km, and while it was considered a minor quake, it was still enough to wake up many light sleepers and early risers in the area.
As soon as the quake hit, social media was flooded with reports from residents who felt the tremors.
One person even joked that they had just woken up from a dream about an earthquake, feeling somewhat vindicated by the real-life event.
Reactions Pour In
Others were more shaken, with one person thinking that something had hit their home due to the sudden jolt and loud noise.
“That was such a sudden jolt I was legit confused if something hit the building or not,” they wrote on social media. The quake was felt as far away as Melbourne, with reports coming in from as far west as Sunbury and as far south as Carrum Downs.
The Impact
While earthquakes of this magnitude are considered minor and unlikely to cause damage, they can still be a scary experience for those who feel them.
Luckily, no injuries have been reported, and it seems that the quake has passed without any major incidents.
