Auckland City is reeling in shock after the body of a newborn baby was discovered in a wheelie bin on Renall St, Freeman’s Bay, last night.
The devastating find has sparked a homicide investigation, with a woman currently in custody and assisting police with their enquiries.
According to Auckland City Detective Inspector Scott Beard, the baby’s body was found around 10pm.
While a post-mortem examination is still underway, police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
A Community in Shock
Inspector Beard acknowledged the news would be “quite confronting” for the community, and urged people to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
“This is a tragedy for everyone concerned, and there is a person’s wellbeing to consider here alongside the investigation,” he said.
The police investigation is ongoing, with an area canvass underway and CCTV footage being sought from residents in the street.
Other wheelie bins in the area are also being searched for any additional evidence.
