Aussie tourists planning to escape to a favourite holiday destination have been urged to exercise extreme caution after a string of high-profile incidents.
The warning comes from the federal government’s Smartraveller website, which has updated its travel advice for Indonesia, particularly Bali.
Rough Seas and Toxic Drinks: The Hidden Dangers of Bali
The update highlights the risks of rough seas and strong rip currents at popular tourist beaches, resulting in drowning cases.
Additionally, travellers are warned about drinks that may be spiked or mixed with toxic substances, which can lead to methanol poisoning.

In recent years, there have been reports of methanol poisoning in Indonesia, including in Bali and Lombok.
In fact, two teens died from methanol poisoning in Laos last year, highlighting the risks of travelling in South-East Asia.
Respect Local Law and Culture
Travellers are also advised to read the Bali Provincial Government’s “Do’s and Don’ts” guide before travelling and to understand visa conditions and entry and exit requirements.
Indonesian authorities have strict standards for damaged passports, and even minor tears or rips to the pages can be considered damaged.
Furthermore, travellers are cautioned against disrespecting local law and culture, as offensive behaviour can lead to criminal penalties and/or deportation.
