Australians heading to Thailand have been issued a terror warning after a series of explosive devices were discovered in popular tourist areas.
The warning comes as a record number of travelers prepare to take flight.
The Smartraveller website has updated its advisory for Thailand, citing an “ongoing risk of terrorism” in the country.
The warning specifically highlights the possibility of attacks in tourist hotspots like Bangkok and Phuket.
Explosives Found Near Phuket Airport
Phuket International Airport has increased security measures after an explosive device was discovered near the airport.
Authorities have made several arrests and seized bomb-making materials in Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga provinces.
The suspects are allegedly linked to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) rebel movement.
The explosives were reportedly designed to spark public panic and disrupt the economy, rather than cause harm to individuals.
Aussie Travelers Urged to Exercise Caution
Australian travelers are advised to exercise a high degree of caution throughout Thailand, particularly in the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.
There have been reports of coordinated attacks in these regions, including terrorism.
The Smartraveller website also warns of the potential for attacks against Israeli interests in other regions, citing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Expert Weighs In on Threat
Greg Raymond, a Thailand expert from the Australian National University, said the discovery of explosives is “certainly concerning” but does not necessarily mean the country is becoming more dangerous.
He added that there are a number of movements in Thailand that could be responsible for the devices.
Thailand is currently in the midst of a political storm, with a leaked call between the country’s PM and Cambodia’s ex-leader sparking controversy over a border dispute.
With over 800,000 Australians traveling to Thailand each year, the warning serves as a reminder to stay informed and take necessary precautions when traveling abroad.
