A shocking incident at Milan Bergamo Airport has left one person dead after being sucked into a plane’s engine on the runway.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 8, when a 35-year-old man broke onto the runway towards a Volotea Airlines jet preparing for takeoff to Spain.
The Deadly Incident Unfolds
According to reports, the unidentified man, who was not a staff member or passenger, burst into the airport and onto the runway after entering a security door leading directly to the aircraft parking areas.
He then allegedly entered the arrivals area on the ground floor before reaching the security door onto the runway, where the tragic incident occurred.
Airport Statement and Investigation
In a statement, SACBO, the company that operates Il Caravaggio International Airport, said that flight operations were suspended from 10:20 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday due to a “problem that occurred on the taxiway.”
The airport’s website also stated that “the cause of the problem is currently under investigation by law enforcement authorities.”
Volotea Airlines’ Response
In a statement to Metro, Volotea Airlines confirmed that one of its aircraft carrying 154 passengers and six crew was involved in the incident.
The airline stated that “initial findings indicate that, following the incident involving one of the aircraft’s engines, one person who was not onboard the flight and has no affiliation with the company sustained serious injuries.”
