A devastating crash in Bibra Lake, Perth, has resulted in the loss of a life.
On Tuesday, a 35-year-old e-scooter rider was involved in a fatal collision with a white Isuzu truck.
The Crash Scene
The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 am at the intersection of Walliabup Way and Bibra Drive.
The rider was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital in critical condition but sadly succumbed to his injuries.
A Growing Concern
This tragedy comes on the heels of another e-scooter-related death last month, which prompted the suspension of hireable e-scooters in the CBD.
The death of Tranh Phan sparked a parliamentary inquiry into the use of e-rideables, highlighting the need for a thorough overhaul of the current regulations.
WA’s Road Toll Continues to Rise
As of now, WA’s road toll stands at 108, the worst half-year record in a decade. This is a significant increase from the same time last year, when 94 people had lost their lives on the roads, and 78 in 2023. The rise in fatalities has raised concerns about road safety and the need for stricter regulations.
E-Scooter Laws in WA
Under current WA law, e-scooters are permitted to operate at speeds of up to 10km/h on footpaths and pedestrian crossings, and up to 25km/h on bicycle paths, shared paths, and local roads. However, the effectiveness of these regulations is being called into question.
