A trainee surgeon at The Austin Hospital in Melbourne has been charged with stalking after a hidden camera was found in a staff toilet.
The 27-year-old junior doctor is facing an additional charge of using an optical surveillance device and was arrested at his home in Heidelberg West.
According to detectives, a mobile phone was discovered in a restricted staff toilet on July 3, which is believed to have been recording staff for some time before it was reported.
Police Raid and Arrest
Victoria Police raided the doctor’s address in Heidelberg West and arrested him. He was later bailed and is set to appear at the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court next month.
Hospital Response
Austin Health chief executive Jodie Geissler alerted hospital staff to the arrest via a hospital-wide email, stating that the hospital had prioritized engaging with staff who may have been affected by the incident.
The hospital’s spokeswoman said that they take the safety and wellbeing of their staff extremely seriously and had made a formal report to Victoria Police.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has been contacted for comment.
