A senior executive at the Commonwealth Bank has lost his job and had his accounts frozen after being charged with using the internet to procure a child under 16 for a sexual act.
Christopher James McCann, a married father of two, was arrested by NSW detectives at Sydney Airport terminal and appeared in Brisbane Arrests Court on Monday, where he applied for bail.
McCann’s lawyer, David Jones KC, criticized the police’s material in objecting to bail as “unprofessional” and engaging in “fortune telling.”
Despite the seriousness of the charge, Magistrate Louise Shepherd granted McCann bail, ordering him to report to police once a week, not to drink or use illicit drugs, and be subject to drug testing.
Alleged Connection with 18-Year-Old OnlyFans Creator
The court was told that police alleged McCann formed a “connection” with 18-year-old Shauntelle Elizabeth Went, a sex worker, and was organising to use her services while in Brisbane in May.
It is further alleged that McCann queried if Went had any “younger friends” she worked with.
Went was also granted bail, despite police opposing it, citing a risk of further offending and general safety to the community.
Strict Bail Conditions
Both McCann and Went were released on strict bail conditions, with McCann ordered to possess only one phone and not to contact any witnesses or alleged victims.
Went was supported by a man who appeared to clash with one reporter while escorting her from the court precinct.
The pair will return to court on August 4 and are facing a single count each of using the internet to procure a child under 16 for a sexual act.
No Pleas Entered
Neither McCann nor Went has entered a plea, and the court was told that police alleged McCann was no longer employed by Commonwealth Bank as a result of the charges.
His financial accounts had also been frozen by detectives.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift justice to be served.
