A horrific incident has shaken the community after a 7-month-old baby boy drowned in a lake at a Queensland campsite.
The baby was found unresponsive in the lake at Chatsworth Park, north of Gympie, around 10:30 am on Saturday.
According to police, the baby’s mother raised the alarm and pulled her child from the water, but he was rushed to Gympie Hospital in a life-threatening condition and later died.
Allegations Emerge on Social Media
In the aftermath of the tragedy, disturbing allegations have surfaced on social media, with some claiming that witnesses saw a man throw the baby into the lake.
However, police have not confirmed any of these allegations and no one has been arrested or charged.
Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield stated that the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death remain unclear, and an investigation is underway.
Parents Were on a Road Trip
The baby’s parents were on a road trip to North Queensland and had stopped to stay overnight at the campsite.
The mother of the child had a traumatic experience, retrieving her baby from the water.
Multiple people assisted with CPR at the scene, and emergency services were called.
Police Investigate
Police cordoned off parts of the park, including a playground and nearby campsite, as they continued their investigation.
Chatsworth Park is a popular rest stop and campsite for highway travelers, with some people staying there permanently and others passing through.
Police are urging anyone who was in the area, particularly between 9 am and 11 am on Saturday, to come forward, including drivers who may have just been passing through.
They are particularly interested in speaking to those who may have seen or heard anything, including vehicles that left the scene around the time of the incident.
Help Needed
The Child Trauma Unit and the Homicide Investigation Team are assisting with the investigation.
