A 16-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to the murder of 70-year-old grandmother Vyleen Joan White in a suspected carjacking incident outside a Redbank Plains shopping centre in February 2024.
This tragic event led to significant youth justice reforms, with Queensland’s Liberal National government introducing “adult time, adult crime” laws after winning the 2024 election.
Under these new laws, juveniles can face adult sentences for over 30 offences, aiming to tackle rising youth crime rates.
Fatal Stabbing Outside Shopping Centre
Police alleged that White was killed during the theft of her 2009 model Hyundai Getz hatchback.
The 16-year-old boy from Bellbird Park was charged with murder, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and three counts of stealing.
In Brisbane Supreme Court, the juvenile, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to all charges while wearing a green jumper and black pants.
Upcoming Sentencing
Prosecutor Chris Cook requested a pre-sentence report by November 3, with sentencing scheduled for November 12.
Defence barrister Matthew Hynes agreed to the dates, and Justice Lincoln Crowley remanded the teen in custody.
