In a move aimed at achieving a more sustainable and efficient department structure, Transport for NSW will be cutting nearly 1,000 jobs, including senior roles, as part of a major organisational restructure.
The department’s Secretary, Josh Murray, announced the impending job cuts in an email to staff on Wednesday, acknowledging that the announcement would be “concerning” and “unsettling for many.”
The reductions will affect approximately 950 senior service manager and award roles, in addition to 300 senior executive jobs, with 200 of the latter cohort having already been actioned.
According to Murray, the changes are necessary to ensure the department operates efficiently, with every dollar saved from costs being redirected towards vital public services such as schools, hospitals, police, and frontline public transport and roads.
He highlighted that the current level of job growth would be “unsustainable,” citing a 30% increase in senior management and award staff.
The restructure is reportedly part of the department’s efforts to centralise functions such as procurement, project support, communications, and technology. Additionally, the move is in line with a 2023 election pledge made by now-NSW Premier Chris Minns to reduce senior executive roles by 15%.
Notably, there will be no cuts to frontline service roles. The department will provide support to affected staff and ensure a smooth transition during this period.
