SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES – A 37-year-old Australian police officer, Paul Leslie Matts, died suddenly while on a beach holiday with his wife and four children.
Paul, a sergeant with New South Wales Police, suffered a fatal medical episode on July 8, 2025, while playing with his children on the beach.
He is survived by his wife, Danni, and their children, Harlow, Xavier (8 months), and stepchildren Archer and Jasmine.
Family friends have launched a fundraiser to support Danni and her young children, describing Paul’s death as devastating. The funds raised will help Danni take time off to grieve and care for her children, as well as provide ongoing emotional and financial support.
According to a GoFundMe page, Paul had a sudden medical episode while his family was having a great time laughing and playing on the beach. He passed away surrounded by his loved ones.
Paul had worked as a police officer for over 16 years and was known in his community for his dedication and kindness.
His MP, Roy Butler, thanked him in parliament for organizing a community day in 2020, which brought joy and entertainment to the local town of Burren Junction.
Family and friends have expressed their grief on social media, with one writing, “A beautiful soul gone way too soon. RIP buddy.” Another added, “So very sad to see someone so young pass away. RIP.”
In addition to his wife and children, Paul is mourned by his parents, David and Julie, and his sisters Catherine and Rebecca.
If you would like to support the family, you can visit their GoFundMe page, which has been set up to provide assistance during this difficult time.
