A 15-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old boy was left with a severed arm after a jet ski crash in Sydney’s south on Tuesday evening.
Emergency crews responded to Tom Uglys Bridge at Sylvania around 6pm, where they found the 15-year-old deceased in the water.
The 14-year-old was rescued and taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where his condition has been upgraded to stable.
Friends and family of the deceased gathered near the crash site on Wednesday, where memorials were laid out, including a wooden cross with the inscription “Long Live Mitch”.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unknown.
Superintendent Donald Faulds stated that they are exploring all possible areas, including the possibility of a collision with the bridge, a submerged object, or another item nearby.
Most debris has been removed from the water, but the main body of one jet ski has yet to be recovered. Both teenagers were wearing life jackets at the time of the crash.
Paramedic Scott McNamara praised the efforts of a police officer who assisted in the rescue, saying that having two people to effect the rescue made it much easier.
McNamara expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and noted that the successful rescue of the 14-year-old is what motivates him to continue his work.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Authorities are seeking public assistance in locating any potential witnesses or those who may have information about the crash.
