A rare tornado has caused widespread destruction in the upscale City Beach suburb of Perth, leaving multimillion-dollar homes severely damaged and streets resembling disaster zones.
The extreme weather event struck on Wednesday afternoon, ripping roofs off homes and violently uprooting trees.
Video footage captured the chaos as the tempest began at City Beach Oval, progressing into residential areas where the level of damage is alarming.
Homes lost roofs, debris cluttered the streets, and fallen trees made roads impassable.
One family residing on Kalari Drive recounted their harrowing experience, stating that they were relaxing in their living room when the tornado tore the roof off their master bedroom, allowing rain to invade their home.
Solar panels dislodged from their house landed on neighboring properties and in backyards, compounding the destruction.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the family urgently sought a hotel for shelter while repairs were arranged.
Another resident from Marapana Road described watching their backyard become engulfed in chaos as trees fell around them. The intense storm brought torrential rain and powerful winds, which left their yard in ruins.
Damage Reports and Emergency Response
Damage reports from Lentara Crescent indicate extreme devastation, with large trees blocking the roads and a carport’s roof caving in under the pressure of the wind.
A fence from one property was seen hurled across the street, and crews from the State Emergency Service were quickly deployed to secure the area.
A strong wind warning was issued for the Perth coastline, with recorded wind gusts reaching up to 76 km/h at Rottnest Island and 73 km/h at Garden Island.
Rainfall measurements indicated that Swanbourne received 20.2 mm since the morning, further complicating the wild weather conditions as a flood warning was also issued for the Causeway after heavy rainfall.
Aftermath and Precautions
Motorists were urged to drive cautiously in the affected areas due to flooded roads. Residents and officials are bracing for the aftermath of this unexpected weather phenomenon, reminiscent of last year’s tornado that caused substantial damage in Bunbury.
The community is advised to remain vigilant and report any further damage or hazards to the authorities.
