Sydney, NSW – A suburban pub in Sydney’s St George area has come under fire for its “insane” price of a steak special, with customers labeling it “ridiculous” and a “rip off.”
Steak Special Sparks Controversy The Peakhurst, a premium pub, is offering a 350g piece of Scotch Fillet with a Marble Score of 4+, served with buttery mashed potato, roasted root vegetables, and Cafe de Paris butter, for $90.
The high price tag has sparked outrage among customers, who took to social media to express their disbelief.
The pub’s manager defended the pricing, citing the high-quality suppliers and the cost of goods involved in producing the item.
“We can’t give away a product at less than the margins we need to keep our business open,” they said.
However, customers are not convinced, pointing out that the pub requires them to fetch their own cutlery.
Comparing prices, a $90 steak special at The Peakhurst is objectively on the pricier side, even when compared to upscale restaurants in Sydney’s CBD.
At Bistecca, a 350g piece of steak would cost $73.50.
The Peakhurst’s other four steaks, ranging from 200-300g, average around $45.5, comparable to prices at pubs in affluent areas like Paddington.
It’s worth noting that beef prices have surged recently due to Donald Trump’s crackdown on imports, with limited stock seeing prices soar.
Costs have also gone through the roof for hospitality businesses, with nearly one in ten food service businesses closing in the past year amid rising rents and labor shortages.
The controversy has sparked a debate about value for money in pubs, with some customers calling for more transparency in pricing.
