Sydney, Australia – The debate over Australia’s speed limits has been reignited, with many calling for an increase to 130km/h on freeways, citing improved road safety and advanced vehicle technology.
Mixed Opinions on Speed Limit Increase A recent informal survey found that over 90 per cent of respondents support increasing the national freeway speed limit, with many arguing that it is long overdue for a change.
However, others expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with higher speeds.
The debate is not new, with Australia’s 110km/h speed limit introduced in 1967 and spreading nationally in 1974.
While some rural areas in the Northern Territory and Victoria have seen 130km/h zones introduced, major freeways still have speed limits of 100km/h or 110km/h.
Lack of Political Support Hinders Change Despite the calls for change, there appears to be no political will to raise speed limits in the country.
Neither major political party has strongly advocated for or opposed the idea in recent years, citing concerns over road safety and the rising road toll.
According to June 2025 road toll data, 29 per cent of all fatal crashes in the past 12 months occurred at 100km/h, making it difficult to justify increasing speed limits.
In fact, many cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne, have recently lowered speed limits on certain roads.
Safety Concerns and Road Design Limitations The Department of Transport and Main Roads argues that speed limits are crucial for managing road safety, and that many factors, including crash history, traffic volumes, and road design, are considered when setting speed limits.
A spokesperson stated that a significant increase in speed limits would require design checks to ensure roads meet design parameter values.
Currently, there are no plans to raise the national speed limit to 130km/h.
The debate continues, with many Australians left wondering if the country will ever see an increase in speed limits.
