Police Chief’s 3-Year-Old Daughter Mauled to Death by Ex-Drug Sniffing Dog
In a tragic incident, the three-year-old daughter of Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill was fatally attacked by a former drug-sniffing dog at the family’s home in Burlington, Colorado.
The child was found unresponsive by emergency services, who arrived at the scene within minutes of the attack on Monday.
Despite efforts to save her, the girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Background of the Attack
The dog, a three-year-old German Shepherd named Draco, was previously a single-purpose narcotics detection K-9 for the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office.
After being taken out of service, it was donated to the Burlington Police Department and housed at the Hill family’s property.
According to officials, Draco was not trained for patrol work, apprehension, or biting, and its attack on the child was deemed “uncharacteristic.”
An investigation has been launched into the incident, but no criminal charges are expected to be filed.
Official Response
Burlington Sheriff Travis Beldon described the attack as “extremely tragic” and stated that it would have a lasting impact on the community.
He emphasised that Draco was trained for detection purposes only and had no history of aggressive behaviour.
The Burlington Police Department released a statement expressing their condolences to the Hill family and the community, calling the incident a “very tragic situation.”
An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances leading up to the attack.
The dog was euthanized following the incident.
