Queensland Rocked by 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Near Brisbane
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck southeast Queensland on Saturday morning, causing tremors to be felt as far south as Brisbane.
The quake, which occurred at 9:49am, was centred in a remote area near Goomeri, northwest of the Sunshine Coast, at a depth of 2km, according to Geoscience Australia.
Felt Reports and Power Outages
More than 9,000 people reported feeling the quake, with many taking to social media to describe their experiences.
Residents in Brisbane and surrounding areas reported feeling their homes shake and hearing a deep rumble.
The earthquake also caused significant disruptions to power supplies, with over 6,500 homes affected by an outage in the vicinity of the quake.
A further 5,204 customers were impacted by a second outage near Hervey Bay.
Official Responses
Former Queensland Premier Steven Miles was among those to comment on the quake, sharing a Google alert on social media and asking if others had felt the earthquake.
Storm Chaser Justin Noonan described the quake as “pretty significant” by Australian standards.
Wider Impact
Reports of the quake came in from across the southeast of the state, including Boondall, Oxley in Brisbane, and Macleay Island near Moreton Bay.
The quake was also felt in Gympie, highlighting its widespread impact.
