Homicide Investigation Launched After Newborn Baby’s Body Found in Stormwater Drain
Police in Alexander Heights, Perth, have launched a homicide investigation after the body of a newborn baby boy was discovered in a stormwater drain on Monday afternoon.
Authorities believe the infant’s body had been placed in the drain in recent days, and they are seeking the public’s help in identifying the mother.
Background
The grim discovery was made by maintenance workers conducting routine cleaning in the area.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad cordoned off the scene and are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.
Investigation
According to Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Cleal, there is no evidence to suggest the baby’s body was washed through the drain.
Instead, investigators believe the child was placed in the drain at that location.
The evidence also suggests the newborn came to be in that location only in recent days.
The identity of the baby’s mother remains unknown, and detectives are urging her to come forward.
“We have serious concerns for the mother’s health, the mother’s welfare, and that is a priority for us,” Detective Cleal said.
Police Appeal
Police are appealing to the public for any information that may be relevant to the case, including CCTV footage or any suspicious activity in the area.
“Any movement, any suspicious activity in the area, any information that anyone has whether you believe it’s significant or not, please let us know,” Detective Cleal said.
The community has been left shocked and disturbed by the incident, with residents leaving flowers and stuffed animals at the scene.
