Sydney and East Coast of NSW Bracing for ‘Significant and Intense’ Rainfall Over Next Three Days
Millions of residents in New South Wales, including Sydney, have been warned to prepare for heavy rainfall over the next three days, with flood watches and warnings issued for large parts of the state.
The State Emergency Service (SES) has urged the community to stay alert and follow advice as an unpredictable weather system threatens to bring flooding to the region.
Residents are being cautioned to be vigilant, especially in areas that have already experienced significant flooding this year.
Weather Forecast
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, with totals of 25-45mm expected today across the east coast from Jervis Bay to south-east Queensland.
Tomorrow, the rain is expected to intensify, with totals of 20-80mm forecast, and isolated areas potentially receiving up to 120mm.
The rain is expected to ease off by late Friday, although isolated falls of 60mm are still possible on the northern NSW coast.
Lingering showers may persist on Saturday, but the high-pressure system is expected to move out to sea.
Flooding and Road Closures Expected
The SES has warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in flood catchment areas.
Road closures are also expected, and residents are being advised to avoid driving through floodwaters.
Flood watches have been issued for parts of the Mid North Coast, Hunter, and North West Slopes, with minor to moderate flooding likely from late today and isolated major flooding possible.
The SES is preparing assets and personnel to respond to the emergency.
SES Preparations and Warnings
SES Deputy Commissioner Deb Platz has urged residents to stay informed about the latest flood advice and to have a flood emergency plan in place before waters rise.
The organisation is preparing for an increased volume of calls for assistance and is sending aviation assets, high-clearance vehicles, and crews into the areas likely to be impacted.
Residents are being reminded to stay safe, think of their family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours, and to keep across the latest warnings and advice via the Hazards Near Me app.
