A 53-year-old man has been arrested after another man was found dead in a shopping centre carpark in Charlestown on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway location at approximately 9:50 am following reports of an assault, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 53-year-old man was arrested after he attended Newcastle City police station. Shortly after the alleged assault, police had been alerted to a man seen running south along the highway.
A crime scene has been established at the Charlestown shopping centre, with detectives commencing a full investigation into the circumstances of the man’s death.
Police Appeal for Footage
The identity of the deceased man has not yet been publicly released. Investigators are appealing to the public for assistance and are particularly interested in reviewing any dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area around the time of the incident.
