Life Sentence for Adelaide Man Who Set Housemate Ablaze
In the Supreme Court of South Australia, Justice Adam Kimber handed down the sentence, citing the extreme cruelty and trauma suffered by the 31-year-old victim.
Mr. Bradmore died two days after the incident, having suffered burns to approximately 80% of his body.
Background to the Crime
The incident occurred on March 17, 2021, at the shared Woodville West home of Cavuoto and Bradmore.
On that night, a blackout occurred, and Cavuoto approached Bradmore, who was holding a candle, with two-stroke fuel.
The court heard that Cavuoto then set Bradmore alight, leaving him to suffer severe burns.
Fleeing the scene, Cavuoto did not attempt to assist his housemate or contact emergency services.
He was later arrested in New South Wales after a car chase with police.
Justice Kimber’s Sentencing Remarks
In sentencing, Justice Kimber emphasized the significance of Cavuoto’s actions, stating that he had prioritized his own interests over Mr. Bradmore’s welfare.
The judge also acknowledged the lasting impact of the crime on Mr. Bradmore’s family, friends, and witnesses, who were left to confront the traumatic scene.
Cavuoto will be eligible for parole in 2045, with his sentence backdated to March 26, 2021, when he was taken into custody.
