In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a school bus carrying 28 students from years 7 to 12 rolled over on the Hamilton Hwy in Stonehaven, west of Geelong, resulting in the death of one female student and leaving several others seriously injured.
According to Victoria Police, the bus was turning left onto the highway from Friend in Hand Rd when it rolled around 8:20am.
At least 21 patients were taken to hospital, with one boy airlifted with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigation Underway
The bus driver, a 76-year-old man from Hamlyn Heights, has been released from hospital and is cooperating with authorities.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lineham stated that the exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and an investigation is ongoing.
The bus driver has undergone preliminary blood and alcohol tests at the scene and will undergo further testing in hospital.
Lineham described the crash as “confronting” for first responders, adding that the situation is “devastating” for the affected families.
Victoria Ambulance area manager David Shearer expressed concern for the long-term impact on the children involved, stating that they will likely be affected for some time to come.

Deputy Prime Minister and Geelong local Richard Marles expressed his sorrow over the tragic accident, offering his condolences to the family, friends, and school community.
The highway has been closed in both directions between Inverleigh and Geelong, with motorists advised to use alternative routes.
