Olympic gold medallist Jessica Fox has withdrawn from the upcoming World Cup events in Europe after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour from her left kidney.
The 31-year-old Australian paddler, who has won six Olympic medals, including three gold, revealed the personal health update on Thursday, stating that she is in recovery mode after a “whirlwind” few weeks.
Surgery and Complications
Fox underwent the procedure last week, which was reported as successful, but encountered some post-surgery complications.
Despite this, she is recovering well and in good spirits.
In a statement, Fox expressed her gratitude to the medical specialists involved in her care, as well as Paddle Australia, her family, friends, and wider support network.
Support from Australian Olympic Committee
Australian Olympic Committee president Ian Chesterman described the past few weeks as a “difficult time for Jess, her family, and for her support crew”.
Chesterman praised Fox’s resilience, saying, “Jess has faced this latest challenge with her renowned determination and fight, just as you’d expect.”
Chesterman acknowledged Fox’s impact on the lives of many, not just in Australia but across the world, and expressed his confidence in her ability to make a full and speedy recovery.
Focus on Recovery
As a result of the surgery, Fox will not compete in the remaining World Cup events in Europe, instead focusing on her recovery at home.
She is looking forward to returning to the water once she has fully recovered.
Fox remains the most decorated canoe slalom paddler, male or female, in Olympic history, with six Olympic medals, including three gold.
