Newcastle Tragedy: Two Students Killed in Car Crash and Fire
Two male international students have died after being trapped in a burning car following a single-vehicle crash in Newcastle on Saturday night.
The two men, believed to be in their 20s, were passengers in a car that left the road and struck a power pole in Mayfield East at approximately 11:15 pm.
Two other occupants of the vehicle survived.
The vehicle, which was carrying four students from Bangladesh, reportedly burst into flames immediately upon impact with the power pole on Maitland Road.
Witnesses and passers-by rushed to the scene and were able to pull the 24-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger from the wreckage.
The two other passengers remained trapped inside until they were freed by firefighters.
Police Investigation Underway
The two men who were freed by emergency services were transported to John Hunter Hospital with critical burns but later succumbed to their injuries.
The 24-year-old driver is also in hospital receiving treatment for minor injuries and is currently under police guard.
The 19-year-old passenger was also admitted for treatment. NSW Police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash and are liaising with the High Commission of Bangladesh.
Authorities have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
