Victoria Police Suspect One or More Individuals Are Harbouring Alleged Cop Killer Dezi Freeman
In a stunning development, Victoria Police have revealed that they believe one or more people are assisting alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman, who has been on the run for seven days after allegedly shooting dead two police officers outside Porepunkah.
Appeal for Information
Superintendent Brett Kahan appealed directly to those who may be harbouring Freeman, saying “people know” where the fugitive is and are choosing not to come forward.
He extended his previous invitation to Freeman to surrender, now also appealing to anyone who may be helping him or knows something about those who are.
Victoria Police have already received 450 separate pieces of information to assist in their search.
Investigation Update
Police have set up a mobile police facility in Bright, where people can provide information.
Superintendent Kahan confirmed that police believe Freeman is still alive, despite not being sighted since the shooting.
When asked about the involvement of Freeman’s wife, Amalia, Superintendent Kahan said it’s two different things to be speaking with police and cooperating with them, encouraging her to do so.
Related Arrest and Search
A 61-year-old man, Steve Mallett, was arrested and charged with possessing an imitation firearm and a drug of dependence in a separate incident.
Although not confirmed to be linked to Freeman, Mallett claimed to be the founder of a group with 40,000 members, Australian Preppers, which Freeman was a part of.
Ongoing Manhunt
Armoured police vehicles entered Mount Buffalo National Park overnight as the search for Freeman continues.
A no-fly zone has been extended until 11:30 pm on Tuesday, September 2, due to safety concerns.
Police have cautioned media to stay away from the information caravan set up in Bright to encourage locals to come forward with information.
