Storm Drain Tragedy: 5-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Swept Away by Strong Current
In a devastating incident, a 5-year-old girl has lost her life after being pulled into a storm drain by a powerful current in Sarasota, Florida, on August 24.
Zaria Miller was playing outside with her brothers on Bahia Vista Street when a water main break triggered a strong current, sweeping her into the drain.
Despite efforts to rescue her, Zaria was carried 100 yards away and later found in a wooded retention area across the street from Sarasota Christian Academy.
Investigation and Response
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Zaria was initially transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.
Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries on August 28.
A GoFundMe page set up for the Miller family has raised nearly $100,000 to cover medical expenses, monthly bills, and other needs during this difficult time.
Community Outpouring
Kyle Weaver, a close friend of the Miller family who organized the GoFundMe, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, stating, “The family is grateful for all the love and support shown over the past few days.”
Zaria’s tragic passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from the community, with many offering prayers and support to the grieving family.
