Australian Boxing Icon Joe Bugner Dies at 75, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Fearlessness
Joe Bugner, a boxing legend known for his bravery and colourful personality, has passed away at the age of 75 in his Brisbane care home.
Bugner, affectionately referred to as “Aussie Joe,” was a heavyweight cult hero who famously went the distance against Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in the 1970s.
Born in Hungary, he migrated to Australia later in his career, becoming one of the most loved personalities in Australian boxing.
Early Life and Boxing Career
Bugner’s life was marked by early adversity, having fled to Britain with his family as a child refugee following the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary.
He went on to win 69 of his 83 contests, with 13 defeats and one draw, becoming a British, European, Commonwealth, and Australian heavyweight champion.
He was the only boxer to have faced both Ali and Frazier without being stopped by either of them, a testament to his durability in the ring.
Bugner’s other notable opponents included American Earnie Shavers and British rivals Henry Cooper and Frank Bruno.
Late Career and Legacy
In 1995, Bugner won the Australian title, and three years later, at the age of 48, he became the oldest world champion in history, claiming the World Boxing Federation heavyweight belt.
His career spanned an impressive 32 years, finally ending in 1999.
Bugner was involved in the film industry after his boxing career, appearing in the 1994 Hollywood film Street Fighter alongside Kylie Minogue and Jean-Claude van Damme.
He also made a memorable appearance on the British TV show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’
in 2009.

Tributes have poured in from around the world, including from promoter Frank Warren and English boxing journalist Gareth Davies, who described Bugner as “a brilliant defensive fighter and one of the characters of the 70s, 80s, and even 90s.”
Bugner is survived by his three children, James, Joe Jr, and Amy.
His relationship with his second wife, Marlene, an Australian, was a significant factor in his decision to move to Australia in 1986.
