Police Intensify Manhunt for Accused Cop Killer in Victoria
Police have swarmed a quiet street in Wangaratta, about 75 kilometres from Porepunkah, in an effort to gather intelligence and track down the suspected cop killer.
Plain-clothed officers and unmarked police cars have been going door-to-door, knocking on windows and questioning residents in the area.
Meanwhile, a police helicopter has been circling above, and bearcats and special operations crews have been seen visiting Freeman’s semi-rural property in Porepunkah.
Background of the Incident
The search for Freeman began on Tuesday, August 26, when a team of 10 police officers arrived at his home in Porepunkah to execute a search warrant related to historic sex offences.
It is believed that Freeman, who has been linked to the so-called “sovereign citizen” movement, carried out the attack that killed Officers Neal Thompson, 59, and Vadim De Waart, 35, and injured a third officer.
Investigation and Manhunt
Police have gathered around 450 pieces of intelligence from the public so far, but they are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Superintendent Brett Kahan has called for Freeman to contact triple zero to make a “surrender plan” and warned that anyone harbouring or assisting in Freeman’s escape is committing a serious crime.
Freeman’s wife, Amalia, has also spoken out, urging him to turn himself in.
Community Response
Alpine Shire Council Mayor Sarah Nicholas has praised the community’s strength and camaraderie during this difficult time.
The council is working to provide support services for those in need in the short and long term.
